Description: Royals starter Jason Vargas pitched the Royals into the World Series.
Insight: He gave up only one run over 5 1/3 innings of work, while allowing two hits and three walks. Vargas struck out six Orioles, and will most likely start Game 4 of the Fall Classic.

Description: Royals starter Jason Vargas threw a three-hit shutout Wednesday against the Athletics.
Insight: Vargas is an extreme fly ball pitcher, but he's allowed just three home runs in his last 66 1/3 innings and they all came in one start on June 27. He's 9-5 with a 3.27 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and a 96/29 K/BB in 143 1/3 innings this season following Wednesday's gem.
7/31/2014 10:27:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Jason Vargas (emergency appendectomy) will start Saturday against Oakland, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Vargas, who last started on July 8, has gone 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 125 innings this season. He threw 60 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday, so he's not likely to throw more than 80-85 pitches Saturday.
7/29/2014 11:09:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Jason Vargas (emergency appendectomy) could start Saturday against Oakland, according to mlb.com.
Insight: He threw a four-inning simulated game on Tuesday. Vargas has gone 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 125 innings this season, but he hasn't started since July 8.
7/9/2014 6:21:00 PM
Description: Royals trainer Nick Kenney said the team is prepared to be without starter Jason Vargas (emergency appendectomy) for three to four weeks, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Vargas has gone 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 125 innings this season. Bruce Chen will take his spot in the rotation, though newly signed veteran Joe Saunders may also be an option.
7/2/2014 5:26:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Jason Vargas gave up six runs on nine hits over four innings against the Angels in his last start of June, but he rebounded with seven scoreless innings Wednesday against the Twins.
Insight: Vargas (8-3, 3.32 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) has allowed five-plus runs in four of his 18 starts this season but two or less in 13 of them.
5/19/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Jason Vargas had a 5-0 lead after one inning Monday against the White Sox, but he failed to make it out of the fifth inning.
Insight: Vargas allowed eight hits, three homers and seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. The left-hander has had trouble with home runs throughout his career and has given up 10 in 64 2/3 innings this year. He'll take a 3.76 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP into his next start Sunday at Los Angeles, the team he pitched for last season.
5/14/2014 5:24:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas has allowed eight hits and two earned runs in 13 2/3 innings over his last two starts after giving up 21 hits and 12 earned runs over 11 1/3 his previous two.
Insight: Vargas limited the Rockies to two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings Wednesday to earn his fourth victory. He has walked just 1.65 batters per nine innings this season, a career low.
5/4/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas has allowed 21 hits and 12 earned runs in his last two starts (11 1/3 innings).
Insight: Vargas had a 1.54 ERA after his first five starts but he's up to 3.50 after giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits in five innings Sunday against the Tigers. If you still have a chance to sell him based on his sub-4.00 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, do it. He doesn't strike out many batters (5.05 K/9) and is homer-prone.
4/13/2014 8:54:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas has a 1.64 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP in 22 innings this year.
Insight: Last year, the Royals acquisition of Angels starter Ervin Santana worked pretty well, so they decided to try it again with Vargas. The 31-year-old had a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 150 innings last year and has never had an ERA better than 3.78 in a season. The extreme fly-ball pitcher is a good match for the Royals, who have two of the best defensive outfielders in the AL in Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain, but he won't keep up what he has done so far.
4/2/2014 8:10:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas gave up five hits and one earned run while striking out six in seven innings Wednesday at Detroit.
Insight: Vargas joined the Royals this offseason after spending one year with the Angels. The lefty is an extreme fly-ball pitcher who is prone to homers and doesn't strike many people out. He went 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 150 frames last season and is best left for AL-only owners.
11/21/2013 9:34:00 PM
Description: The Kansas City Royals signed Jason Vargas to a four-year, $32 million contract Thursday.
Insight: After four seasons with Seattle, Vargas fired 150 innings and went 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 24 starts with the Angels in 2013. He'll presumably take former Angel Ervin Santana's spot in the Royals rotation. He's a mediocre fantasy option due to his high WHIP and lack of Ks.
8/29/2013 8:38:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles righthander Jason Vargas fired seven shutout frames Thursday in a victory over the Rays.
Insight: It was one of Vargas' better outings of the season. Usually when you think of the Angels rotation, Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson are the first names that come to mind. That's probably still true but Vargas is slowing creeping into the conversation. His 3.54 ERA in 18 starts is a career-best.
8/25/2013 10:48:00 AM
Description: Angels starter Jason Vargas has allowed 152 batters to reach base in 107 1/3 innings this season (1.42 WHIP), but his ERA is 3.77.
Insight: Vargas has stranded 79.3 percent of baserunners, a mark that would rank 13th in baseball if he had enough innings to qualify for the ERA title. The left-hander isn't a dominant pitcher like most of the players on top of the LOB% leaderboard, so he'll remain a risky play going forward.

Description: Los Angeles starter Jason Vargas had surgery to remove a blood clot from his left arm pit on Wednesday.
Insight: He'll miss "several weeks" according to MLB.com's Greg Johns. Vargas had been 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA before this freak injury happened.
6/25/2013 4:46:00 PM
Description: Angels lefty Jason Vargas will undergo surgery this week to remove a blood clot from his left armpit, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times.
Insight: Vargas expects to resume throwing in about two weeks, so it looks like he could be back in mid-July. Dillon Gee had surgery for a blood clot in his shoulder last July and ended up missing the rest of the season, but it doesn't look like Vargas' situation is that severe.

Description: The Angels have placed lefty Jason Vargas on the DL with a blood clot near his left armpit. He'll seek a second opinion before opting for surgery, the team said. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, LA Times.
Insight: Mets starter Dillon Gee had a blood clot in his shoulder last July and missed the rest of the season. Vargas, who has gone 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP this year, could be headed for the same fate if he has to undergo surgery.
5/19/2013 8:49:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles lefthander Jason Vargas fired seven shutout frames Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: Vargas got off to a rocky start this season (0-3, 4.85 ERA in his first five starts) but he's really turned things around in his last four outings. Over that span, he's gone 3-0 with 23 strikeouts and a 2.74 ERA.
