D'backs try to stay in win column in San Francisco
(Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks shoot for a third straight win Friday in the second matchup of a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.
The Diamondbacks took the opener of this set, 4-2, on Thursday and scored all of their runs in the fifth inning. Paul Goldschmidt had a two-run double and scored on a two-base hit by Martin Prado, who later crossed the plate when Aaron Hill singled.
Adam Eaton, Miguel Montero, Goldschmidt and Hill had two hits apiece for the D'backs, who have won two in a row since losing three straight and sit seven games off the final wild card spot in the National League.
"It's a matter of piecing things together, keep grinding out at-bats," D'backs infielder Willie Bloomquist said.
Trevor Cahill allowed two runs in five innings for the win.
Patrick Corbin will take the mound for Arizona Thursday and has lost two straight starts. Corbin is 1-4 in his past five decisions and has allowed 13 runs in his last two appearances. He gave up five runs in five innings on Sunday to the Giants and is 2-2 with a 4.43 earned run average in seven career starts against them.
Overall, Corbin is 13-5 with a 2.96 ERA in 27 starts this season.
The Giants have lost three of four games and hoped Ryan Vogelsong could get the job done in this series opener. However, Vogelsong allowed four runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
"He just lost it and had trouble making a pitch," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Vogelsong. "He got the ball up and made some mistakes."
Pablo Sandoval and Hector Sanchez each had an RBI for the Giants.
Giants catcher Buster Posey missed his second straight game with a fracture on the tip of his right ring finger. Posey, who was injured Tuesday in San Diego trying to block a ball in the dirt, is expected to return soon.
"From what I'm hearing from trainers and doctors, it's something that hopefully in a couple of days, once it calms down, I'll be able to play through it," Posey told the club's website Thursday.
Yusmeiro Petit gets the nod for the Giants Friday and is 2-0 with a 3.12 earned run average in three games (2 starts) this season. Petit defeated the D'backs in Sunday's 8-2 win with six innings of two-run ball and is 1-0 in two games (1 start) lifetime against Arizona.
The Giants have won 10 of 16 from the Diamondbacks this season.
