Braves' Medlen wins NL Pitcher of the Month

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Kris Medlen was voted the National League Pitcher of the Month for September.

Medlen has received the honor in back-to-back months, becoming the first pitcher to accomplish the feat since Ubaldo Jimenez did so back in April and May of 2010.

The 26-year-old struck out a major league high 46 batters during the month, while holding opponents to a .169 batting average. He allowed just six earned runs in six September starts and posted a 4-0 record for the second consecutive month.

Medlen's 9-0 record as a starter tied the major league record for most wins in an undefeated season by a starting pitcher, joining New York Yankees pitchers Tom Zachary (1929) and Whitey Ford (1950) and Chicago Cubs pitcher Ken Holtzman as the only others to accomplish the feat.

Other pitchers considered for the award were Medlen's teammate Craig Kimbrel, Cincinnati's Homer Bailey, Washington's Gio Gonzalez and Philadelphia's Cliff Lee.
