Seaforth, ON (Sports Network) - Michael Gligic had the round of his life on Friday, nearly one for the record books.
Gligic had two holes to make a birdie and attain golf's magical number, but settled for two pars and a course record, 10-under 60 that vaulted him into the lead at the Seaforth Country Classic.
Playing in his first tournament of the season and having missed his last nine cuts since 2009, Gligic came out of nowhere to post an eagle and eight birdies in a sensational round to gain a two-stroke lead heading into the weekend at 12-under 128.
And a spot in next week's Canadian Tour Championship.
The same couldn't be said for Izzy Beisiegel, the first woman to gain entry to a men's professional tour. Beisigel, who simply needed to make the cut to earn a paycheck and a spot in the Canadian Tour Championship, faltered to a three- over 73 on Friday.
At two-over 142, Beisiegel missed the cut by five strokes.
Brian Unk (64) and Wes Heffernan (65) are two strokes back at 10-under 130, while Dustin Risdon (67) and Garrett Sapp (65), fourth and 14th, respectively, on the tour money list, share fourth at minus-nine with Liam Kendregan (66), James Allenby (68), Darren Griff (67) and Andrew Parr (65).
Gligic started the day five shots off the lead, but quickly made up ground by opening his round with four straight birdies.
He made the turn at seven-under par after another birdie at the seventh and poured in another birdie chance at the 11th.
From the 14th, Gligic played a three-hole span at four-under, with an eagle, birdie, birdie sequence providing him with a two-shot lead heading into the weekend. He had a chance at 59 with a birdie on 17 or 18, but couldn't get it done.
NOTES: If Gligic had shot a 59, he wouldn't have tied the tour record for lowest 18-hole score. That record is held by Jason Bohn, who shot a 58 at the par-71 Huron Oaks Golf Club at the 2001 Bayer Championship...The old course record was 61, achieved by Adam Bland in 2008 and Tom Glissmeyer in 2010...A total of 61 players made the cut, which fell at three-under 137.
