Hoge, making third start, wins in Winnipeg

Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - It didn't take long for Tom Hoge to win as a professional, capturing the Canadian Tour Players Cup in only his third career start.

Hoge, a Monday qualifier, carded a five-under 66 on Sunday at Pine Ridge Golf Club to finish 72 holes at 16-under 268, two shots better than Benjamin Alvarado. It's only the second Canadian Tour event for the 22-year-old, who had five birdies in a flawless final round.

Third-round leader Josh Habig, whose only title came in this event in 2006, faltered to a one-over 72 and finished in a share of third at 11-under.

Alvarado moved into second with a six-under 65 on Sunday, putting him at 14- under 270 overall.

Jae An (65) and Brad Fritsch (65) joined Habig in third.

It was all downhill for Habig rather quickly after be triple-bogeyed the par- five fourth hole. Hoge birdied the fourth and fifth to move to 13-under, and he cruised from that point.

Habig made up two of his lost shots with birdies at Nos. 6 and 8, but a double bogey at 11 all but ended his chances.

Hoge held a substantial lead going down the stretch, and birdies at the eighth, 12th and 13th only padded his margin. Alvarado was able to make it appear as close as it did with four birdies in a five-hole stretch from the 12th.

Alvarado, though, parred the final two holes to assure Hoge of an easy finish.

Vince Covello (67) finished sixth at 10-under, while Adam Hadwin (64) was seventh at nine-under after the best round of the day. Brian Prouty (67) was eighth at minus-eight.

NOTES: Hoge led after the second round, while Habig led after the first and third...With the win, Hoge earned his tour card and a two-year exemption...The Canadian Tour is off for four weeks before returning with the Seaforth Country Classic, where Kent Eger won by two last year.
