Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Blake Bortles threw for three touchdowns and
Storm Johnson scored twice on the ground as the UCF Knights registered a
convincing 38-7 win over the Akron Zips in the 2013 kickoff for both schools
at Bright House Networks Stadium.
Bortles converted 18-of-24 for 314 yards and shook off three sacks as he
guided the Knights (1-0) to victory. Johnson carried the ball 20 times for a
game-high 99 yards, the team coming up with 476 yards of total offense in the
The Zips (0-1) struggled on both sides of the ball as quarterback Kyle Pohl
hit on 16-of-21 attempts, but finished with just 98 yards and was intercepted
once. Backup signal-caller Nick Hirschman converted two of his four passes,
one of those going for a touchdown in the final minute of the contest to
prevent the shutout.
Bortles and the UCF offense struck immediately, needing less than a minute to
record a 91-yard TD pass play to Breshad Perriman. Later in the first quarter

With just under seven minutes left in the half, Bortles capped an eight-play,
75-yard drive with a 39-yard TD pass to J.J. Worton. Just before the end of
the second period, kicker Shawn Moffitt knocked through a 32-yard field goal
to give the hosts a commanding 24-0 lead at the break.
Johnson tallied both of his touchdown runs in the third, first reaching the
end zone on a nine-yard effort and then crossing the goal line from one yard
out to push the lead to 38-0.
Hirschman put together a 10-play, 77-yard drive for the visitors late in the
fourth, culminating with a 11-yard TD pass to Imani Davis, but that was the
extent of the good news for an offense that was limited to a mere 250 yards.
Akron, which was last held scoreless by Ohio State in the 2011 opener, 42-0,
is coming off a 1-11 campaign in 2012, the lone victory coming against
Morgan State (66-6) in the third game of the season.
The Knights, winners of a 56-14 decision against Akron in last year's opener,
posted a pair of shutouts a season ago, holding both Charleston Southern
(62-0) and Memphis (41-0) scoreless.
