NCAA Game Summary - UNLV at Utah State

(Saturday, September 29)

Final Score: Utah State 35, UNLV 13

Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Chuckie Keeton threw for a career-high 402 yards and four touchdowns as the Utah State Aggies posted a 35-13 win over the UNLV Rebels in non-conference action at Romney Stadium.

Keeton, converted 20-of-33 passes, was picked off once and sacked two times on the night for the Aggies (4-1) as they picked up their second straight victory. Kerwynn Williams not only led the team in rushing with 113 yards on 20 rushing attempts, he also caught seven passes for 147 yards and a score in the triumph.

The Rebels (1-4), who surprised Air Force in their Mountain West Conference opener last week (38-35), were paced by Nick Sherry who connected on 18-of-39 passes for 188 yards and a score. Sherry was also picked off one time and sacked on three occasions.

Following a scoreless first quarter, USU produced the first points of the night with a 32-yard field goal by Josh Thompson, finishing off a 12-play, 52- yard drive.

Less than four minutes later the Rebels claimed their only advantage of the game when Sherry hit Max Johnson with a three-yard TD strike to give the visitors a brief 7-3 edge.

Utah State closed out the second quarter with 17 unanswered points, beginning with a one-yard TD pass from Keeton to D.J. Tialavea, followed by a 50-yard pass play to the end zone from Keeton to Chuck Jacobs. As time expired in the first half, Thompson knocked through a 31-yard field goal to make the score 20-7 at the break.

Third-quarter scoring amounted to a pair of UNLV field goals by Nolan Kohorst from 24 and 26 yards to cut the deficit to 20-13.

In the fourth frame the Aggies put plenty of distance between themselves and UNLV as Keeton tossed touchdown passes to Williams and Jacobs of 74 and 17 yards, respectively, followed by a late safety to provide for the 22-point margin of victory.

Ranked 11th in the nation in yards allowed (274.8 ypg) heading into the week, the Aggies permitted 305 yards to the visiting Rebels.
