NCAA Game Summary - Wake Forest at Virginia
(Saturday, October 20)
Final Score: Wake Forest 16, Virginia 10
Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Chad Hedlund kicked three field goals
and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons notched a 16-10 win over the Virginia
Cavaliers in an ACC clash at Scott Stadium.
Josh Harris ran for 55 yards and a touchdown to help the Demon Deacons (4-3,
2-3 ACC) get back into the win column after dropping three of their previous
four contests. Sophomore cornerback Kevin Johnson had a fumble recovery and a
key fourth-quarter interception near the end zone.
Phillip Sims threw 253 yards for Virginia (2-6, 0-4) but could not keep the
Cavaliers from suffering their sixth straight loss.
Wake Forest took a 7-0 lead on Harris' 16-yard touchdown scamper at the 12:02
mark of the first quarter. The TD was set up by Lovell Jackson's 60-yard punt
return on the previous play.
The score would remain that way until the final 20 seconds of the half, when
Sims capped a 13-play, 72-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tim
Smith to tie the score.
However, Wake Forest started its next drive at the UVA 45-yard line, and
Tanner Price completed a 41-yard pass to Brandon Terry down to the 4. After a
timeout, Hedlund kicked a 22-yard field goal as time expired to send the Demon
Deacons to the locker room with a 10-7 lead.
The Deacs added to their lead with two more field goals by Hedlund in the
third quarter (44, 24). A 30-yard field goal by UVA's Ian Frye made cut the
deficit to 16-10 with less than a minute to play in the third quarter. The
Cavaliers' comeback hopes ended when punt returner Khalek Shepherd lost a
fumble with less than two minutes remaining, after the defense had come up
with a big stop.
The Demon Deacons entered the game allowing 206 rushing yards per game, but
they were able to hold UVA to 48 yards on 32 carries.
