NCAA Game Summary - Wisconsin at Oregon State
(Saturday, September 8th)
Final Score: Oregon State 10, (13) Wisconsin 7
Corvallis, OR (Sports Network) - Sean Mannion threw for 276 yards and a
touchdown on 29-of-47 passing as the Oregon State Beavers escaped with a 10-7
upset win over No. 13 Wisconsin at Reser Stadium on Saturday.
Brandin Cooks hauled in six passes for 80 yards and a touchdown and Malcolm
Agnew led the rushing attack with 45 yards on 11 carries for Oregon State
(1-0), which began its season a week later after the season opener against
Nicholls State was postponed due to Hurricane Isaac.
Danny O'Brien threw for 172 yards and a score on 20-of-38 passing, while
Heisman hopeful Montee Ball carried it 15 times for 61 yards for the Badgers
(1-1).
Jacob Pedersen caught four passes for 36 yards and a touchdown and Jeff
Duckworth hauled in seven balls for 55 yards in defeat for Wisconsin, which
had its 33-game, non-conference winning streak halted.
After neither side could crack the scoreboard in the opening 15 minutes,
Oregon State opened the scoring early in the second quarter.
Starting from their own 32, Mannion got the drive off to a good start with a
26-yard completion to Cooks. He went 4-for-7 through the air during the 9-
play, 42-yard drive and Trevor Romaine booted a 43-yard field goal to give
Oregon State the lead.
Following the field goal, points were at a premium for the remainder of the
first half. Wisconsin was unable to generate any kind of offensive rhythm,
while Oregon State's best opportunity to extend the lead came in the latter
stages of the second quarter.
"It was just a great performance. Guys were very sound," Oregon State coach
Mike Riley said. "I think one of the key elements was that everyone worked
hard and was winning off the block. When we got into situations where we threw
in a nickel and dime defense we made some big plays and that combination is
awesome. It is about play making and they played really hard."
With just over four minutes to go before the break, the Beavers drove down to
the Wisconsin 23, where Romaine had a shot for a 40-yard field goal, but
pushed it wide to the right, as it remained 3-0 at halftime.
Oregon State widened its lead to 10-0 on the opening possession of the second
half as Mannion capped an 11-play march with a 20-yard touchdown strike to
Cooks.
The Oregon State defense came up with 4th-down stops on consecutive Wisconsin
possessions in the fourth quarter, but the Badgers made it interesting when
O'Brien hit Pedersen in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 1:31
to go.
Wisconsin went for the onside kick on the ensuing kickoff and initially
appeared to recover the ball, but upon official review, it was determined that
the ball touched kicker Kyle French's arm prior to traveling the required 10
yards.
Oregon State was awarded possession and ran out the remaining time to seal the
upset.
"A lot of credit goes to Oregon State. They did a lot of good things today to
go out and get a win," Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said. "There just wasn't
any room down there. We didn't handle the pressure very well and they brought
some pressure. They did a really nice job of controlling the line of
scrimmage."
