GAME NOTES: In a Southern Conference showdown at the Ramsey Center, the
Chattanooga Mocs will square off against the Western Carolina on Thursday
Chattanooga most recently earned a 72-68 win over Elon. It was the third win
in the last four games for the Mocs who will begin their two-game road swing
to end the season with Appalachian State after this matchup.
Western Carolina is fresh off an 80-70 win over Coastal Carolina. The win
ended a two-game slump for the Catamounts and leaves them 1-1 in their current
four-game homestand to close out this regular season.
The Mocs lead the all-time series 57-22 but it was the Catamounts who came out
victorious earlier this season, 90-81. For the past six seasons the squads
have split the regular season matchups, but the Catamounts have not lost to
UTC at the Ramsey Center since February of 2007, winning the last five
meetings at home.
Gee McGhee scored 24 points with eight rebounds to lead Chattanooga over the
Phoenix. Drazen Zlovaric and Z. Mason added 10 points each, while the squad
shot over 50.0 percent from the floor and earned 20 points at the free-throw
Mason is the Mocs' top scorer this season with 14.3 ppg to go with 7.3 rpg,
all while shooting 47.2 percent from the floor. McGhee adds 12.4 ppg and is
the only other UTC player averaging in double figures. The Mocs have solid
depth with no one averaging over 30.0 mpg. Defensively is where UTC struggles,
allowing 71.2 ppg on nearly 45.0 percent shooting from the field.
Brandon Boggs tallied 26 points in 27 minutes off the bench for WCU in the win
over the Chanticleers. James Sinclair added 17 points, hitting on 4-of-5
attempts from 3-point range. Despite going just 2-of-9 from the field, Trey
Sumler managed 12 points, but was guilty of seven turnovers.
It was a poor performance from Sumler, who leads the team in scoring with 18.1
ppg, upping that to 19.6 ppg in conference play. He is joined in double-figure
scoring by Tawaski King, Boggs, and Tom Tankelewicz. King scores 11.2 ppg with
a team-high 6.1 rpg. Boggs nets 10.5 ppg and Tankelewicz contributes 10.1 ppg.
The Catamounts are tough on the offensive end, where they score nearly 70.0
After the game against Coastal Carolina, Sumler will be looking to bounce back
with a strong performance in front of the home crowd. Chattanooga has
struggled away from home, earning just three wins in 10 games. The Catamounts
should be able to take the win in this one.
