San Diego opened up the game with a 12-2 run to take control in the early stages, but the Dukes came storming back and carried a 33-30 advantage into the intermission. The Toreros trailed at halftime despite outscoring their opponent in the paint, 18-8, in the opening 20 minutes.

James Madison held the lead for most of the second period, but it faced a 58-55 deficit with 3:21 left in regulation. Moore knocked down a jumper to reduce the Toreros' lead to one point before Goins knocked down a pair of free throws to put the Dukes back in front for good. Davis made it a three-point game with a dunk with four seconds remaining and Cameron Miles missed a three- point attempt at the buzzer that would have forced overtime. JMU converted 12- of-17 attempts at the charity stripe in the second half to hang on for the victory.
