Final Score: South Dakota State 68, Montana 67 (2OT)
Missoula, MT (Sports Network) - Tony Fiegen's two free throws with nine
seconds remaining in the second overtime were the difference in a 68-67
victory for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits over the Montana Grizzlies
in a double-overtime thriller at Dahlberg Arena.
Jordan Dykstra had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds before
fouling out and Fiegen posted a double-double of his own with 13 points
and 13 rebounds for South Dakota State (9-3). Nate Wolters scored 15 points
and came a rebound shy of a double-double and Brayden Carlson netted 10
points. The Jackrabbits have won three straight.
Mathias Ward netted 17 points and Kareem Jamar added 16 points, seven
assists and six rebounds for Montana (4-4). Mike Weisner chipped in 13
points off the bench. The Grizzlies have lost three of their last four.
Both teams struggled in the first half. South Dakota State shot just 36.7
percent including just 2-of-12 from 3-point range and led 25-22 at
intermission. Montana shot at a 38.5 percent clip but made just 1-of-8
shots from beyond the arc.
There were seven ties and 10 lead changes in the second half. Montana led
49-45 with five minutes remaining but an 8-1 spurt from South Dakota State
put the Jackrabbits ahead 53-50. A Keron DeShields layup and a free throw from
Weisner in the final minute tied the game at 53-53 and when Wolters missed a
3-point shot at the buzzer the game went to overtime.
The Jackrabbits scored the first six points of the first extra session but the
Grizzlies clawed their way back with a 3-pointer from Weisner and a layup from
Ward. Jamar tied the game 59-59 with a free throw but missed a second attempt.
Jamar managed to secure the rebound and get the ball to DeShields but he was
off the mark with a 3-point shot at the buzzer.
The teams traded leads in the final overtime and the Grizzlies lead 67-66 with
less than 10 seconds remaining. Fiegen corralled a rebound off a Wolters' miss
with nine second left and sank both free throws to put the Jackrabbits ahead.
Carlson then stole the ball from Jamar on the ensuing possession as South
Dakota State escaped with the win.
