GAME NOTES: The SIU Edwardsville Cougars aim for their first true road win of the season as they make their inaugural visit to the Winfield Dunn Center for an Ohio Valley Conference tilt against the Austin Peay Governors.
This is just the second time these schools will square off on the hardwood. Austin Peay won last season's meeting, 80-67, at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville.
SIUE is coming off of a 58-54 victory over Tennessee Tech which ended a four- game losing slide. The Cougars' win improved their overall record to 5-9 and lifted them to a 1-3 mark in OVC action. The lack of success comes from their inability to produce on the offensive end, where they are netting just 62.1 ppg. SIUE is decent on the other end as it is sixth in the conference with 66 points allowed per tilt.
Michael Messer tallied 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and Jerome Jones chipped in 13 points for SIUE in its decision over TTU on Saturday. Each team shot worse than 40 percent in the game overall. Tennessee Tech had a 38-32 edge on the boards but turned the ball over 21 times. Jones is pacing the squad with 15.1 points per contest while Kris Davis chipped in 10.4 points and 3.1 assists per contest. Messer is tallying 10.1 ppg on 48.4 percent shooting from the floor to round out the double-digit scorers for SIUE.
Austin Peay played tough its last time out, but fell to the reigning OVC champion Murray State Racers, 81-78, at home on Saturday. The setback dropped APSU to a 5-13 overall standing and an identical 1-3 mark in OVC play. The Governors are led by junior guard Travis Betran, who is fourth in the conference in scoring with 17.8 points per game. Anthony Campbell (14.1 ppg) and Will Triggs (12.4 ppg) are both contributing double-digit scoring averages along with 5.1 rebounds per contest while Chris Horton paces the team on the glass with 6.6 boards a game.
Betran had a terrific performance versus Murray State, as he poured in 27 points in the close loss. Triggs chimed in with 12 points and Anthony Campbell added 10. APSU struggled to get defensive stops down the stretch as MSU's Isaiah Canaan scored at will.
The Governors will not need to shut down an elite scorer like Canaan in this one. Betran will continue to stand out and keep Austin Peay playing at its highest level possible as long as his hot shooting streak continues. SIUE's balanced attack will need to step it up as it will be unable to contain the Governors.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Austin Peay 71, SIU Edwardsville 60
