GAMES NOTES: The Old Dominion Monarchs will once again try to capture their first win in conference play when they host the George Mason Patriots in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
On Saturday, George Mason ended a two-game slide with a 74-63 win over James Madison. With the victory the Patriots are now 13-9 overall and 6-4 in CAA play. The Patriots' league mark has them tied with Towson for fifth in the conference. George Mason has an even 4-4 mark on the road, but will return home to host Delaware next.
In what has been a miserable season, Old Dominion failed yet again to capture a conference victory on Saturday in an 83-63 loss to Georgia State. It was the ninth straight loss for the Monarchs who are just 2-19 on the season. In 12 previous home contests the Monarchs have captured just a single victory. Up next Old Dominion will head to Philadelphia to take on Drexel.
When these teams met earlier this season George Mason rolled over Old Dominion in a 71-46 win at home. It was the fourth straight win for the Patriots against the Monarchs, but Old Dominion still leads the all-time series, 34-20.
By dominating the boards by a 35-25 margin and shooting just under 50 percent from the field, George Mason was able to post the 11-point victory over James Madison. The Patriots forced 15 turnovers in the game which turned into 22 points, while knocking down 23-of-26 shots from the free-throw line.
Sherrod Wright has almost single handedly kept George Mason afloat this season. The 6-foot-4 guard is the only player on the roster scoring in double figures, ranking third in the conference in the category (17.9 ppg). Johnny Williams (7.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg) is the second best scoring option on the roster and the only other player scoring at least seven points per game. With such a lack of scorers the Patriots are scoring just 64.4 points per game on 43.1 percent shooting. George Mason has managed to overcome the offensive deficiencies by limiting teams to 62.4 points per game on less than 40 percent shooting.
In its loss to Georgia State, George Mason shot at just a 32.3 percent clip and was dominated from the perimeter. The Panthers knocked down 16 shots from 3-point range as compared to just four 3-pointers from the Monarchs. Old Dominion was the superior team inside with a 43-31 edge in rebounds and a 28-18 advantage on points in the paint.
The main issue for Old Dominion has been its inability to put forth strong offensive efforts. The Monarchs are ranked second to last in the CAA in scoring (61.2 ppg), while sitting in dead last in the league in field goal percentage (.385). Old Dominion is also letting up 69.7 points per game on 45.8 percent shooting, while ranking second in the conference in rebounds (37.7 pg). DeShawn Painter (11.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg) is the lone scorer in double figures for the Monarchs, leading the team in rebounds as well. Keenan Palmore (8.2 ppg, 3.0 apg) and Donte Hill (8.0 ppg) have each shown flashes of ability but shoot less than 40 percent from the field.
Though it is playing at home in this contest, Old Dominion hasn't exactly dominated on its floor. Led by Wright the Patriots will have enough firepower to keep the Monarchs winless in league play.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: George Mason 67, Old Dominion 62
