GAME NOTES: In a Missouri Valley Conference matchup between two squads that are coming off upset wins, the Indiana State Sycamores host the Southern Illinois Salukis at the Hulman Center on Saturday afternoon
The most recent 64-62 win over Wichita State was the first for the Salukis since Jan. 12 as the team came into the contest with the Shockers with a six- game losing streak in tow. SIU is now 9-14 on the season, a record certainly hampered by an ugly 2-10 mark in the MVC.
The Sycamores are fresh off a 76-57, upset win over 13th-ranked Creighton. It was the highest ranked team that Indiana State has ever beaten in the Hulman Center. ISU's Jake Odum become the 35th member of the 1,000 point club for the Sycamores. It was the third win in four games for Indiana State, which is now 15-8 overall, including an impressive 8-4 in league play, tied with Wichita State for second place in the conference, just one game behind the Bluejays.
The Salukis lead the all-time series, 79-42, and won the last matchup, 76-71 back on Jan 12th in Carbondale. Desmar Jackson scored a career-high 29 points in the game which ended a five-game losing streak for Southern Illinois.
In the win over the Shockers, T.J. Lindsay supplied 14 points off the bench, shooting 4-of-6 from 3-point range, while Jackson and Jeff Early scored 11 points each. Early also led the team with seven rebounds. Jackson is the team's top scorer this season, averaging 15.9 ppg. Early adds 11.9 ppg and grabs a team-high 7.6 rpg, while shooting just under 50.0 percent from the floor. Since league play has begun the Salukis are yet to win on the road, losing all six games thus far.
Odum was 7-of-10 from the field, scoring 22 points, while RJ Mahurin added 17 and Manny Arop managed 13 against the Bluejays. Odum is the top scorer for Indiana State, averaging 14.2 ppg and shooting 48.4 percent from the field. Arop adds 12.9 ppg with 5.0 rpg, while both players are the only two to start all 23 games this season for the Sycamores. ISU has not yet lost at home in conference play in six opportunities, and has lost just one loss in 10 home games overall.
Both teams are coming off wins over the top two teams in the conference but the Sycamores have been more consistent overall. ISU has been dominant on its home court and now has even more motivation to go out and get the win.
