Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Recaps(Saturday, March 9th)
Final Score: George Mason 60, Drexel 54
Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Sherrod Wright tallied 23 points as the fourth-seeded George Mason Patriots took down fifth-seeded Drexel Dragons in the quarterfinal round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum.
Byron Allen chipped in 16 points for GMU (18-13), which also received 10 points off the bench from Vertrail Vaughns. The Patriots will take on the top- seeded Northeastern Huskies in the semifinals on Sunday.
Frantz Massenet paced Drexel (13-18) with 20 points and four assists. Damion Lee went 2-of-10 from the floor to net 11 points while Daryl McCoy grabbed 12 rebounds.
Both teams struggled in the early going. Drexel shot just 34.6 percent from the field including 1-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half while the Patriots made only 34.4 percent of their field goal tries. GMU took a slight, 27-23 lead into halftime after the ugly opening period.
The Dragons improved to hit on 39.1 percent of their attempts from the field after the intermission, but the Patriots sank 17-of-19 at the free-throw line to extend their lead and advance.
Although Drexel held a 33-28 edge in the rebounding battle, it was not enough to overcome its 17 turnovers, which the Patriots converted into 21 points.
Final Score: Delaware 62, Hofstra 57
Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Devon Saddler led all scorers with 22 points as the second-seeded Delaware Blue Hens outlasted the seventh-seeded Hofstra Pride, 62-57, in the quarterfinal round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at Richmond Coliseum.
Jarvis poured in 15 points thanks mostly to an 11-of-14 showing from the foul line for Delaware (19-13), which will play James Madison in the semifinals. Jamelle Hagins logged a double-double with 12 points and 15 boards, and Carl Baptiste made up for a scoreless afternoon with 12 rebounds.
For Hofstra (7-25), Stevie Mejia stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Taran Buie also netted 13 points, while David Imes poured in 12 points.
Neither team shot greater than 39 percent from the field in the first half, but Hofstra was able to take a 27-24 lead at intermission by outscoring Delaware at the foul line, 7-3.
The Blue Hens scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 31-27 lead, and while Hofstra kept its deficit to single-digits throughout the stanza, Delaware never trailed from that point on.
Delaware helped its cause by shooting 22-of-32 from the foul line, while Hofstra struggled at the stripe at just 7-of-16.
Final Score: James Madison 72, William & Mary 67
Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Devon Moore and A.J. Davis each scored 20 points as the James Madison Dukes advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinals with a 72-67 win over the William & Mary Tribe at Richmond Coliseum.
Rayshawn Goins added 13 points for the sixth-seed Dukes (18-14) who will face second-seed Delaware in Sunday's semifinals.
Marcus Thornton had a game-high 25 points, Brandon Britt tallied 17 and Tim Rusthoven chipped in 15 for William & Mary (13-17).
James Madison shot 51.9 percent from the floor and hit 5-of-10 from beyond the arc to take a slim 34-33 lead into the break. William & Mary connected on 50 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes.
The Tribe shot at a 50 percent clip from the field yet again in the second half. The Dukes shot 46.7 percent but had four more field goals than the Tribe as they held on for the win.
The Dukes had a 19-11 edge in points off turnovers and outscored the Tribe, 40-26, in the paint.
