(Wednesday, July 9)
Final Score: New York 4, Atlanta 1
Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis d'Arnaud hit a two-run homer during a three-run seventh, helping the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves, 4-1, in the third test of a four-game series.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Lucas Duda had one RBI apiece for the Mets, who have won four in a row for the first time this season.
New York starter Dillon Gee (4-1) was sharp in his return from the disabled list, allowing just one run on six hits over seven-plus innings. He made his first start since May 10 due to a right lat strain.
"He made pitch after pitch," Mets manager Terry Collins said of his starter. "He was the Dillon Gee we've known to love."
B.J. Upton drove in the lone run for the Braves, who have lost four straight. Ervin Santana (7-6) gave up four runs on six hits with two walks over seven innings.
The Mets used a three-run seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. David Wright led off with a hustle double to left-center field and moved to third when Duda lined out to right. Bobby Abreu walked before Nieuwenhuis hit a sacrifice fly to right. D'Arnaud followed with a blast to left.
The Braves left men on the corners in the eighth. Tommy LaStella led off with a single to center and moved to second on Gerald Laird's bunt single. Vic Black took over for Gee and got pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit to ground into a fielder's choice. Upton struck out swinging and Andrelton Simmons flied out to end the threat.
Jenrry Mejia stranded runners on second and third in the ninth to pick up his ninth save of the season. After giving up two hits and throwing a two-out wild pitch, Mejia got LaStella to go down swinging.
Earlier, the Mets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Daniel Murphy doubled to right and raced home on Duda's single to right-center field.
Gee retired 10 straight batters until Santana reached base on an infield single with two outs in the sixth. Santana then scored on Upton's double to center. Upton was thrown out between second and third on the play.
"We're not scoring runs," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We're going through a little streak right now."
