National League Game Summary - Atlanta at Philadelphia
(Wednesday, April 16th)
Final Score: Atlanta 1, Philadelphia 0
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Julio Teheran pitched his first career shutout to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.
Teheran (2-1) allowed just three hits with four strikeouts to lead the Braves to their fifth straight victory. Evan Gattis continued his hot play of late by going a career-high 4-for-4 with a solo home run. Gattis stroked two home runs in Monday's 9-6 win to open the series.
"Julio was terrific to navigate a dominant left-hand lineup for his first career complete game," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "To make it 1-0 against that lineup in this ballpark, you can't ask for anything more."
Ryan Howard, Carlos Ruiz, and Jimmy Rollins accounted for Philadelphia's three hits while Cliff Lee (2-2) threw a career-high 128 pitches across nine frames. He surrendered one run on 11 hits with 13 strikeouts for the Phillies, who have dropped two straight.
The Braves opened the scoring in the fourth. Gattis launched a solo shot that barely made it over the wall in left field to lead off the frame. Dan Uggla and Chris Johnson followed up with singles before Andrelton Simmons hit into a double play and Teheran grounded out to end the inning.
"The pitch to Gattis I made a mistake," said Lee. "I tried to elevate a fastball. It wasn't a bad spot, but it wasn't the spot I was trying to go to."
Teheran retired 12 straight Phillies until Howard hit a short dribbler to second and beat out Uggla's throw to first for Philadelphia's first hit of the night to lead off the fifth.
Lee struck out 6-of-7 Atlanta batters across the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Ruiz smacked a line drive single to left with two outs in the eighth for the Phillies' second hit of the game, but Cody Asche lined out to left field to end the inning.
Johnson and Simmons both hit sharp grounders for singles to lead off the ninth for the Braves. Teheran laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a base. Lee struck out Jason Heyward and got B.J. Upton to fly out to strand runners at second and third.
Teheran stayed in to pitch the ninth. After getting Tony Gwynn and Ben Revere to ground out, he allowed a line drive single to Rollins, who stole second with Chase Utley batting. Utley hit a sharp grounder that Uggla collected and threw to Freddie Freeman at first to end the game.
The Braves have homered in every game since being shut out by the Mets on April 8, hitting 16 homers in their last seven games ... Lee struck out Heyward four times ... This was Lee's fifth career complete-game loss. He is also the first pitcher to strike out 13 batters in a 1-0 loss since he did it against the Braves on September 27, 2013 ... Johnson went 3-for-4 ... Lee's previous career-high pitch count was when he threw 126 on June 22, 2011 at St. Louis ... Utley's 11-game hitting streak came an end after the second baseman went 0-for-4.
