Indians-Royals game suspended in 10th inning
Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cleveland Indians scored two runs in the top of the 10th to take a 4-2 lead over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday night.
But bad weather prevented the Royals from batting in the bottom half of the inning.
The game was suspended following a rain delay. The teams will resume the contest on Sept. 22 in Cleveland before the start of a three-game series between the AL Central rivals.
The Royals entered the game with a half-game lead over the Tigers for first place in the AL Central. Detroit lost to the White Sox earlier Sunday. Cleveland trails Kansas City by 3 1/2 games.
Alex Gordon hit a solo homer off Cody Allen in the ninth to make it a 2-2 game.
Royals pitcher Greg Holland recorded two quick outs to start the 10th. Jason Kipnis then reached on Billy Butler's fielding error. Yan Gomes followed with a single to put men on the corners for pinch-hitter Lonnie Chisenhall, who hit a two-run double off the wall in right. Roberto Perez struck out swinging.
Cleveland starter T.J. House allowed one run on five hits while striking out five over seven innings, while Kansas City starter Danny Duffy gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Nori Aoki led off with an infield single, moved to third on Omar Infante's single and crossed the plate on Gordon's sacrifice fly.
Cleveland tied the game in the third after Perez walked, moved to second on a Jose Ramirez walk and scored on Michael Brantley's double down the left-field line.
The Indians took the lead during their next at-bat. Gomes singled to shallow center field, moved to third on Duffy's throwing error and scored on Mike Aviles' sacrifice fly.
The Royals start a three-game series against Texas on Monday, while the Indians begin a four-game set with the Tigers on Monday.
