Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Behind a career-best performance from Caleb Herring, the UNLV Rebels managed to outlast the New Mexico Lobos, 56-42, in a Mountain West Conference shootout at University Stadium.
Herring completed 24-of-34 passes for 293 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions for UNLV (3-2, 1-0 MWC), which has won three straight since opening the season 0-2. Tim Cornett also had the best performance of his career, turning 25 carries into 179 yards and three touchdowns. Devante Davis was Herring's top target, tallying 10 receptions for 164 yards and three scores.
The Rebels' three wins so far this season is their highest total since finishing 5-7 in 2009.
New Mexico (1-3, 0-1) amassed nearly 500 rushing yards on the night, with Kasey Carrier (192 yards, TD), Carlos Wiggins (119 yards, two TDs) and Cole Gautsche (108 yards, two TDs) all crossing the century mark. It was the first time in school history three different players rushed for at least 100 yards in the same game. Gautsche completed 4-of-9 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, with Wiggins (57 yards, TD) the primary beneficiary in the receiving game.
New Mexico got up to a quick 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. Carrier rushed in a score from 22 yards out, then Wiggins ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run.
UNLV responded with 14 unanswered points to tie the game. First Marcus Sullivan ran in a 69-yard touchdown, then Cornett rushed in a four-yard score.
The Lobos capped off a frantic first quarter when Wiggins picked up a 10-yard touchdown run.
The Rebels tied the game early in the second quarter on a four-yard scoring strike from Herring to Taylor Barnhill, but the Lobos answered less than a minute later on a seven-yard touchdown run by Gautsche.
Herring completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Davis, which was shortly followed by another Gautsche rushing touchdown, this time from four yards out. UNLV recorded the last score of the back-and-forth half when Cornett rushed in a touchdown from nine yards out as the teams went into intermission tied up at 35-35.
The squads exchanged touchdowns in the third quarter, with Herring hooking up with Davis on an 11-yard score and Gautsche tossing a 43-yard touchdown pass to Wiggins.
UNLV orchestrated a 15-play, 80-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped off by a seven-yard touchdown pass from Herring to Davis. The Rebels put the game away less than two minutes later when Cornett ripped off a 75-yard touchdown run.
The game consisted of 1,149 total yards and the teams combined to convert all eight red zone opportunities into touchdowns. New Mexico was plagued by six penalties, while UNLV was penalized just once.
