NCAA Game Summary - Wake Forest at ULM

(Thursday, August 28)

Final Score: ULM 17, Wake Forest 10

Monroe, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pete Thomas threw for 189 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown on the ground as the ULM Warhawks defeated the visiting Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 17-10, in non-conference action at Malone Stadium.

Thomas, a transfer from NC State who began his college career at Colorado State in 2010, converted 23-of-41 passing and was sacked once as he guided the Warhawks (1-0) to the victory. Running back Centarius Donald gained a game- high 117 yards on 26 carries for the hosts.

The Demon Deacons (0-1), under the direction of first-year head coach Dave Clawson, struggled mightily to produce on offense in his debut. John Wolford, the first true freshman to start a season opener at quarterback for Wake Forest, connected on 12-of-22 for 97 yards, was picked off once and sacked seven times. Wolford was also credited with 11 rushing attempts, but finished with minus-40 yards, bringing the team's total down to minus-three in that department.

Both offenses sputtered in the first half, but luckily for the Demon Deacons the special teams showed up. In addition to a 38-yard field goal by Mike Weaver in the final minute of the second quarter, the first touchdown of the contest was registered by Kevin Johnson who recovered a blocked punt in the end zone less than three minutes into the meeting.

Trailing by double digits at the break, the Warhawks battled back with 10 points in the third quarter as Justin Manton knocked through a 30-yard field goal and seconds later Mitch Lane intercepted a Wolford pass and brought it back 31 yards for a touchdown.

With the Wake Forest offense floundering, the Warhawks went on the attack in the fourth quarter, with Thomas reaching the end zone on a nine-yard run at the 3:37 mark to give the hosts a seven-point advantage which eventually stood up. Thomas carried the ball four times for a net of 15 yards.

The Demon Deacons, who owned the 118th-ranked offense in the country last season (290.7 ypg), generated a mere 94 yards of total offense on the night. On a more positive note, linebacker Brandon Chubb registered a game-high 18 tackles in the losing effort, the most for a Wake Forest player in more than a decade.

The Warhawks won the first-ever meeting between the programs by a score of 21-19 at Wake Forest on Sept. 14, 2013.
