GAME NOTES: The teams with the lowest scoring offenses and two worst records in the Colonial Athletic Association match up this afternoon when the UNC Wilmington Seahawks take on the James Madison Dukes at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Seahawks, who will try for their second three-game winning streak of the season, are averaging 63.0 ppg. The Dukes, losers in four of their last five contests, are last at 62.5 ppg. UNCW comes into the game last in the conference at 2-10, while JMU is 4-8.
Buzz Peterson has his Seahawks on the verge of their first three-game winning streak since Nov. 13-18. UNCW is coming off a 55-45 home win over Northeastern on Thursday. Craig Ponder finished with 11 points and six rebounds for the Seahawks. Dylan Sherwood added 10 points and five rebounds for UNCW, which has won back-to-back tilts following a 14-game skid. Both wins have come by double digits.
Peterson has worked hard to find a winning combination all season. Thursday marked the 15th different lineup he's used. Overall, 12 of the 14 players on the team have started at least once this season.
Cedrick Williams leads the way with 12.8 ppg and 6.9 rpg for the Seahawks, while Addison Spruill (9.8 ppg) is second in scoring, followed by Chris Dixon (7.6 ppg) and Freddie Jackson (7.1 ppg). Williams leads the team with 41 blocks. The Seahawks are last in the CAA in 3-point field goal percentage (.265) and also in overall shooting accuracy (.408).
The Dukes suffered an 81-65 loss at first-place Delaware Wednesday. Andre Nation led the way with 17 points while Yohanny Dalembert posted a double- double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
JMU has four players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Nation (16.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg). Charles Cooke (14.4 ppg), Ron Curry (11.8 ppg) are also major contributors offensively, as is Andrey Semenov (10.5 ppg), who has converted 17 consecutive free throw attempts. The Dukes are making only 41.3 percent of their shots, barely ahead of UNCW, and the same can be said for 3-point shooting (.273).
James Madison has taken seven of the last nine meetings between the two teams. That includes a 60-55 triumph on Jan. 4. Cooke netted 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting and secured nine rebounds in that game. JMU struggled to a 3-of-14 performance from beyond the arc in that game. It's not likely the Dukes will improve much in that category for this encounter, but as long as Matt Brady's team plays well defensively, the Dukes should be able to stop UNCW's short winning streak. The Dukes have won four in a row at home over UNCW. The Seahawks' last win in the Shenandoah Valley came on Jan. 26, 2006.
