GAME NOTES: The Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans look to end the regular season with a third straight win as they host the UL-Monroe Warhawks in Sun Belt Conference action at the Stephens Center.
After losing five in a row, the Trojans seem to have righted the ship with consecutive wins to give themselves a shot at the four seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Little Rock is tied with UT-Arlington for fifth place. Arlington visits South Alabama on Saturday. The Trojans also trail Louisiana and Arkansas State by one game. Those teams play each other Saturday night.
The Trojans defeated Arkansas State, 74-67, last Saturday. James White tallied 20 points and eight rebounds, as Little rock improved to 9-8 in the Sun Belt. Ben Dillard and Mareik Isom each had 11 points for the Trojans, who pulled away from the Red Wolves late in the contest.
With 5:11 remaining, White hit a jumper to put Little Rock ahead 57-56. From there, the Trojans scored 17 of the final 28 points to secure a victory.
Trojans leading-scorer and rebounder Will Neighbour (16.9 ppg, 7.0 rpg) missed the game as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury. His status for this game in uncertain. Josh Hagins (12.0 ppg) is a solid scorer in his own right, and White (11.2 ppg, 6 rpg) provides the best threat on the glass with Neighbour sidelined for the Trojans who aver just over 70 ppg but yield over 73 ppg.
Monroe comes into this tilt with a 6-11 mark. The Warhawks secured a berth in the conference tournament on Thursday despite losing to Arkansas State 64-58 thanks to losses by both Troy and Texas State. Monroe will be either the seven or eight seed, depending on the Troy result.
In Thursday's setback Tylor Ongwae finished with 14 points and Marvin Williams registered a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Warhawks, who have lost four of five to fall to 9-16 overall.
Ongwae leads the anemic Warhawks offense with 16.1 ppg this season. Jayon James is the leading rebounder with 6.1 rpg. ULM averages just 64.3 ppg this season.
These two schools battled back on Feb. 15 with the Warhawks coming away with a 65-49 win. Ongwae poured in a game-high 25 points and James filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, five blocks and three steals for ULM, which used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to break the game open. For UALR, Dillard netted 14 points and White tallied a double- double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
It's hard to see ULM pulling out another win like that first outing. ULM is not a good road team, going 3-10 as the visitor and it has been struggling as late. Little Rock, on the other hand, has seven home wins and have more on the line with conference seeding than the Warhawks. Expect Little Rock to pull this one out.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Arkansas-Little Rock 70, ULM 60
