GAME NOTES: The Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans will attempt to stop a losing streak on Thursday night when they visit the Troy Trojans in a Sun Belt Conference matchup.
UALR has dropped five straight games following a 75-71 loss to Texas-Arlington last Saturday. The visiting Trojans' recent slide has pushed them to the middle of the Sun Belt standings (7-8), and to just 12-15 overall. They will play their final two games of the regular season at home against Arkansas State and ULM, respectively.
Troy has three games left to go after this one, the next of which is a visit to ULM. There simply isn't enough time for the hosting Trojans to make much of an impact in the Sun Belt title chase, as they are just 4-10 in conference play and 9-17 overall.
When Troy visited UALR on Jan.11, it posted a 75-62 victory. Troy has won back-to-back games against UALR and has evened up the all-time series at six wins apiece.
UALR trailed by as many as 15 points against UTA and, although it was able to slash that deficit to three in the final minute, the Trojans didn't have enough in the tank to pull off the comeback. UALR only connected on 38.2 percent of its shots from the field in the losing effort.
Leading scorer Will Neighbour (16.3 ppg, 7 rpg) didn't have much success in the loss to UTA, as he only managed to score eight points and collect a pair of rebounds. He has scored in single digits in four of the last six games. However, it bears mentioning that he had missed back-to-back games prior to the UTA matchup with an injury. Josh Hagins (12.5 ppg) is the next best scorer on the roster, and is coming off a 21-point showing against the Mavericks. James White (11.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg) is connecting on a team-best 53.5 percent of his field goal attempts, but he is more of a supplemental scorer.
Troy also fell in its last outing, dropping an 86-78 decision to South Alabama. The Trojans were on the short end of a 40-24 difference in points in the paint, while allowing the Jaguars to connect on 51.6 percent of their total shots. Hunter Williams scored a game-high 24 points to lead four players in double figures.
There is more balance at the offensive end of the floor for Troy, which features five different players putting in at least nine ppg. Williams (13 ppg) is the most productive scorer on the roster, but he is only shooting 34.9 percent from the field. Antoine Myers (11.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg) is a more efficient finisher, netting 50.3 percent of his shots from the field. He totaled 14 points and seven rebounds in the loss to South Alabama. Kevin Thomas (9.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg) leads the team on the glass, and Tevin Calhoun (9.8 ppg) and Jeff Mullahey (9.3 ppg) are also important contributors to the cause.
The hope for UALR is that Neighbour can return to form after a rusty return from injury. However, that will be tough to do on the road, where the visiting Trojans are just 5-9 this season.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Troy 70, Arkansas-Little Rock 67
