Cedar City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Tate Unruh scored 22 points and connected on 6-of-9 from 3-point range as the Northern Colorado Bears cruised past the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 77-52, in a Big Sky Conference clash at Centrum Arena.
Derrick Barden netted 17 points with six rebounds and four steals for Northern Colorado (17-12, 11-9 Big Sky), which snapped a four-game losing streak. Tevin Svihovec contributed 12 points in the winning effort.
Jaren Jeffery scored 11 points to pace Southern Utah (2-27, 1-19), which returned to the loss column one game after snapping the nation's longest losing streak at 26 games. Jeffery added four rebounds on the night, and the Thunderbirds connected on just 38.6 percent shooting in the contest.
Northern Colorado connected on an impressive 59.3 percent of its shot attempts in the first half, and recorded five steals to take a 40-20 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Bears hit 5-of-10 from 3-point range in the frame, while Southern Utah made just 26.3 percent of its tries from the floor.
The Bears hardly cooled off in the second half, netting 52 percent of their shot attempts in the period and hitting 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. The Thunderbirds increased their shooting accuracy to 48 percent from the field, but only made one of their seven 3-point tries. Northern Colorado increased its lead by another five points in the half and coasted to victory.
The Bears outscored Southern Utah from 3-point range, 24-9, in the contest, and owned an 18-2 points off turnovers differential. The Thunderbirds had the advantage in free-throw makes, 15-11, and in bench points, 21-16.
