Bowling Green, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - George Fant tallied 18 points and nine boards as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers won in a close one against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 75-72 in a Sun Belt Conference showdown at E.A. Diddle Arena.
Chris Harrison-Docks added 15 points for the Hilltoppers (20-10, 12-5 Sun Belt), who have won clinched the second seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. T.J. Price had 13 points and O'karo Akamune chipped in 10.
Elfrid Payton registered a double-double with 31 points and 13 rebounds for the Ragin' Cajuns (19-11, 10-7), who have lost two of their last three games. Xavian Rimmer finished with 14 points and Shawn Long cleared 10 boards.
WKU shot 51.7 percent from the field in the first period as it led 37-34 at the break. Louisiana made 35.3 percent of its field goal tries in the first 20 minutes.
The Hilltoppers made just eight shots in the second frame but went 21-of-26 from the free-throw line. Despite the poor shooting, they never trailed in the second frame, with the Ragin' Cajuns managing just a 37.1 percent shooting effort.
Despite the loss, the Cajuns dominated the glass by outrebounding WKU 47-35. The Hilltoppers outscored their guests 18-10 off of turnovers.
