London, England (Sports Network) - There won't be a rematch of the 2008 Beijing Games final in men's water polo after defending champion Hungary and runner-up United States lost in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The U.S. finished fourth in Group B with a 3-0-2 record, but was handed an 8-2 defeat by the winner of the other pool, Croatia.
Croatia was powered by two goals each from Damir Buric, Miho Boskovic and Paulo Obradovic, while Americans Peter Varellas and Ryan Bailey scored in the loss.
"The Olympics is a pretty amazing thing, happening once every four years and you have to be at your peak for those two weeks. For whatever reason, we started out well and we were strong against Montenegro, but after that we seemed to be a little bit up and down. We never found our rhythm and probably the belief in ourselves either," said USA head coach Terry Schroeder.
Montenegro will be Croatia's next opponent after besting Spain 11-9 in its quarterfinal matchup.
Meanwhile, 2011 world champion Italy got the best of Hungary, 11-9. The Italians saw Pietro Figlioli, Maurizio and Christian Presciutti all score three times.
Italy will face Serbia in the semifinals. The Serbians trailed by three goals on three occasions against Australia before rallying for an 11-8 triumph.
