American League Game Summary - Cleveland at Seattle
(Sunday, June 29)
Final Score: Seattle 3, Cleveland 0
Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Felix Hernandez sparkled in eight shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out nine to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.
Hernandez (10-2) extended his own Mariners record by pitching at least seven innings and allowing two runs or fewer in his ninth straight start.
The ace right-hander, who walked three, tossed 107 pitches and was still hitting the mid-90s on the radar gun in the eighth inning, when he got his last two strikeouts.
"(Hernandez) keeps getting better in all aspects," Mariners catcher Mike Zunino said of his batterymate. "He's controlling the whole game."
Robinson Cano hit a two-run homer and scored twice for the Mariners, who won two of three in the series. They bounced back from a 5-0 loss on Saturday when they were one-hit by Josh Tomlin.
Lonnie Chisenhall had Cleveland's only hit, a single, and the Indians lost for the sixth time in their last eight games.
T.J. House (0-2) is still seeking his first major-league win. The Cleveland lefty gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk in six-plus innings in his sixth start.
"I thought T.J. was really good," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "On a lot of nights, we're sitting here bragging about his outing."
The Mariners squandered a bases-loaded chance in the first inning when Logan Morrison struck out and had just one baserunner over the next four innings against House.
Luckily for them, Hernandez was cruising.
The former AL Cy Young winner had retired 10 in a row when Chisenhall led off the fifth inning with Cleveland's only hit. But Chisenhall couldn't scramble back to first base in time after David Murphy lined out to third baseman Kyle Seager and was doubled up on a strong throw.
In the sixth, Michael Saunders led off with an infield single and went all the way to third on a throwing error by House. Cano dodged a high-and-inside pitch before driving an 83 mph changeup into the right-field seats for his fifth homer of the season and a 2-0 Mariners lead.
In the ninth, Cano singled and scored on a Mike Zunino hit to give Seattle its 3-0 lead. Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth for his 23rd save of the season.
The Mariners will start a three-game series at Houston on Monday ... The Indians will finish an eight-game road trip with a three-game series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers beginning on Monday.
