National League Game Summary - San Diego at Philadelphia|
(Tuesday, September 10th)
Final Score: San Diego 8, Philadelphia 2
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jedd Gyorko went 3-for-5 with an RBI and
three runs scored as the San Diego Padres took an 8-2 win over the
Philadelphia Phillies to open a three-game set.
Chase Headley, Ronny Cedeno and Rene Rivera each drove in two runs for the
Padres, who have won four straight. Andrew Cashner (9-8) won for the first
time since Aug. 2 as he gave up two runs on four hits with a walk and seven
strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.
"I thought it was an outstanding game by Cashner," said San Diego manager Bud
Black. "He controlled the game right from the start. I thought he was really
efficient early in the game and pounded the strike zone with the fastball and
Cody Asche hit a solo home run while Cesar Hernandez also had an RBI for the
Phillies, who came into the game off a three-game sweep of the Braves. Tyler
Cloyd (2-4) was tagged for seven runs on nine hits over four-plus innings.
"My pitches were up and I made a lot of mistakes," said Cloyd. "Pitches were
getting too much of the plate and not really mixing it up too much. Definitely
needed to throw a lot more offspeed pitches. They were on my fastball and
cutter all night."
The Padres got on the board in the first as Gyorko doubled with two outs and
Headley followed with a single to right for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Gyorko led off with a single and Kyle Blanks had a base hit two
batters later. Cedeno chased one home with a double and Rivera followed with
a two-run double for a 4-0 lead.
San Diego kept pouring it on with four more runs in the fifth. Gyorko singled
in a run and Headley followed later with a single off Zach Miner to plate
another runner. RBI singles from Blanks and Cedeno later in the inning made it
an 8-0 game.
Asche's solo home run in the fifth, a shot to center, made it an 8-1 contest.
The Phillies got another run across in the eighth as Cesar Hernandez walked
with the bases loaded to force in a run, but Michael Martinez struck out to
end the frame.
The Phils took two of three in San Diego in late June ... The Padres batted 7-
for-13 with runners in scoring position ... San Diego had 13 hits in the game.
