MLB Draft Profile - Mark Appel
From The Sports Network

Position: RHP

College: Stanford

Year: Senior

Height: 6-4

Weight: 195

Mark Appel was the best pitcher in last year's draft, but teams knew signability was going to be an issue. Still, the Pittsburgh Pirates made him the eighth overall selection...Appel never came to terms and returned to Stanford for his senior season and did not hurt his stock any...Appel has gone 8-4 through 12 starts for the Cardinal this season and boasts a 1.97 ERA and a .201 opposing batting average. He led the Pac-12 and ranks fourth in the NCAA with 110 strikeouts and is a top contender for a number of postseason awards, including the Golden Spikes Award...With a four-seam fastball that touches 100 mph and sits 94-96, a two-seam fastball around 92-94 with a ton of arm-side run, a sharp slider from 82-84, and a changeup from 81-83 with plenty of depth, he has the tools to perform well in the big leagues...If you want to find a downside, he sometimes overthrows his fastball and rushes delivery from time-to-time...Appel should move very quickly through the minor leagues...Prior to being taken by the Pirates last year, Appel was taken out of high school in the 15th round of the 2009 draft by the Detroit Tigers.
