Tennessee State to visit Air Force, play two classics

Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Tennessee State will play an FBS opponent for the first time since 2006 when it travels to the Air Force Academy on Sept. 24.

Tennessee State, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference in the FCS, will play in two classics and host four games at LP Field as part of an 11-game schedule.

The Tigers' season opens on Sept. 3 at home against Southern University in the John Merritt Classic.

On Sept. 10, Tennessee State will go to Memphis to face Jackson State in the Southern Heritage Classic.

Tennessee State will kick off its OVC schedule at Murray State on Sept. 17 and then play their final non-conference game a week later at Air Force. The Tigers are 2-1 against FBS opponents since 1981, most recently losing to Vanderbilt, 38-9, in Nashville in 2006.

The Tigers move back into OVC competition when they visit Austin Peay Oct. 1. They will host 2010 champion Southeast Missouri State Oct. 8, visit Tennessee Tech Oct. 15 and go to Eastern Kentucky Oct. 22.

After a bye, coach Ron Reed's squad will travel to Eastern Illinois Nov. 5 and play at home in its first two games, Nov. 12 against UT Martin on Homecoming and Nov. 19 against Jacksonville State.

The Tigers finished 3-8 overall and 0-7 in the OVC last season.
