Elon begins Swepson era against Vanderbilt

Elon, NC (Sports Network) - Elon will open coach Jason Swepson's first season with a visit to Vanderbilt on Sept. 3 in the Phoenix's first game against a Southeastern Conference opponent.

The Phoenix announced an 11-game schedule on Thursday which includes five home games at Rhodes Stadium.

The home opener is against Division II Concord on Sept. 10. The Phoenix also will host four Southern Conference opponents: The Citadel Sept. 24, Georgia Southern Oct. 1, Chattanooga on Homecoming Day Oct. 22 and Appalachian State Nov. 19.

Elon will make a Sept. 17 visit to North Carolina Central from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Phoenix's road games in the SoCon are against Western Carolina Oct. 8, Samford Oct. 15, Wofford Oct. 29 and Furman Nov. 12.

"I feel that we have put together a challenging schedule for our team this year," said Swepson, who spent the last four seasons as running backs coach at North Carolina State. "To open up against an opponent from arguably the nation's top conference at the FBS level in Vanderbilt is a great opportunity for our program. The Southern Conference is a very competitive league and we will have to be ready for the grind that it produces every single week. Our goal is to have some success early and build on that and get better each week. Ultimately we want to be in the hunt to win our first SoCon championship at the end of the season."
