Report: SWAC targets Tennessee State

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Southwestern Athletic Conference has invited Tennessee State to join its conference, The Times newspaper of Huntsville, Ala., reported late Thursday.

Tennessee State, located in Nashville, Tenn., has been a member of the Ohio Valley Conference since 1986. If university officials accept the SWAC's invitation, Tennessee State would become the SWAC's 12th member.

The Tigers football program annually plays two or three schools from the SWAC, which is one of two FCS conferences for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The other one is the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Tennessee State athletics director Teresa Phillips told The Times that school officials have discussed conference affiliation in recent years.

"We had a study looking at several things, including conference affiliation, but we never had a conclusion to that," Phillips said. "That conversation is always somewhere. It's always on the tip of our tongue."

SWAC commissioner Duer Sharp did not comment when contacted by the newspaper.
