NCAA Game Summary - Oregon State at UCLA
(Saturday, September 22nd)
Final Score: Oregon State 27, (19) UCLA 20
Pasadena, CA (Sports Network) - Sean Mannion completed 24-of-35 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns as Oregon State knocked off the 19th-ranked UCLA Bruins, 27-20, at the Rose Bowl.
Brandin Cooks and Markus Wheaton combined for 325 yards and a pair of TDs on 15 receptions for the Beavers (2-0, 1-0 Pac-12), who showed no rust after two weeks off following a narrow season-opening win against Wisconsin.
Storm Woods added 96 yards and a rushing score on 21 carries for Oregon State, which snapped a two-game losing skid over their conference foes.
"It was a great job by our team. I thought it was a whole team effort and defensively again we were remarkable," said OSU head coach Mike Riley. "That was a really good group of offensive players and a good offensive scheme and I thought we just kept playing. When something bad happened, nobody blinked and somebody else made a play. I was just so proud of them for their resiliency, for playing hard and making plays to win the game."
Brett Hundley passed for 372 yards and one touchdown on 27-of-42 efficiency, also crossing the end zone on a rush for the Bruins (3-1, 0-1). Shaquell Evans posted 148 yards and a score on six receptions in defeat.
Jonathan Franklin was limited to 45 yards on 12 carries, after averaging 8.2 yards per tote through UCLA's first three games.
Ka'i Fairbairn's 35-yard field goal inside of two minutes remaining drew UCLA within 27-20, and the Bruins defense came up with a stop on 3rd-and-8 when it pushed Woods back for a loss of a yard.
A delay-of-game penalty on fourth down resulted in a punt, but the offense took over on their own 10 with just five seconds left. Hundley completed a pass to Jordon James but time ran out.
"That was a tough loss, obviously, but our hats are off to Oregon State," said Bruins head coach Jim Mora. "That's a good defensive football team and a well- coached football team and they beat us. We have lots of lessons to learn from this. We'll see how we handle some adversity. We got knocked back a little bit, so it'll be a great lesson for our young men to respond to this. I expect that they will respond in the proper way, and we'll be ready to go next week."
Trevor Romaine's 22-yard make put Oregon State ahead and was the lone score of the opening quarter.
Fairbairn's 22-yard field goal tied the score, but OSU responded on its ensuing drive, needing just one play -- a 75-yard strike from Mannion to Cooks -- to assume a 10-3 advantage.
Mannion's 42-yard pass to Wheaton put the visitors ahead by a 17-3 count, but Hundley laid out a perfect ball down the right sideline for Evans, who ran the rest of the way for a 65-yard connection and 17-10 game at the half.
Woods' two-yard dash to paydirt capped an 88-yard, 13-play sequence and put Oregon State ahead 24-10 with 1:21 left in the third quarter.
Hundley responded on the Bruins' next possession with a one-yard run and it was 24-17 with 14:01 to play.
Romaine hit from 17 yards out to complete OSU's next touch for a 27-17 score.
The last time the Beavers defeated ranked teams in back-to-back games was during the 2000 season (23-13 over No. 8 Oregon on Nov. 18, 2000; No. 10 Notre Dame 41-9 on Jan. 1, 2001 in the Fiesta Bowl) ... OSU still has never defeated ranked teams in back-to-back weeks ... Riley ties Lon Stiner (1933-48) for the most wins as Oregon State head coach with 74 ... Cooks, who led all receivers with six catches for 175 yards, passed the 100-yard receiving mark for the first time ... Wheaton, who posted nine grabs for 150 yards, tied Phil Ross for fifth on the OSU reception list with 153 .. There were 945 yards of total offense, with the Beavers rolling up 501.
