NCAA Game Summary - Arizona State at California

(Saturday, September 29)

Final Score: Arizona State 27, California 17

Berkeley, CA (Sports Network) - Taylor Kelly completed 26-of-45 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Arizona State Sun Devils to a 27-17 victory over the California Golden Bears at Memorial Stadium.

Arizona State (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) won for the first time since 1997 at California. Kelly spread the ball around throughout the day, hitting seven different receivers, his favorite target being Rashad Ross who reeled in seven passes for 84 yards. Kevin Ozier turned his three catches into 42 yards and a pair of scores.

California (1-4, 0-2) struggled to move the ball efficiently, suffering from 12 penalties for a loss of 119 yards. Quarterback Zach Maynard completed 9- of-28 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown, but was also sacked six times along the way. Running back Isi Sofele had 105 yards rushing and one score on 15 carries.

The Sun Devils scored first when Kelly completed a one-yard touchdown pass to Darwin Rogers to put the visitors up 7-0.

Early in the second quarter, Cal needed just three plays to cover 76 yards, thanks in part to Sofele who found the end zone on a 24-yard run to tie the score at 7-7.

ASU then ripped off 13 straight points to assume the lead with kicker Alex Garoutte converting a 28-yard field goal at the 6:08 mark of the second frame and Kelly hitting Ozier with a nine-yard scoring pass to give the Sun Devils a 17-7 edge at the break.

Garoutte came on for the Sun Devils again in the third period and connected on a 33-yard field goal to put them up 20-7.

The Bears offense responded near the end of the third quarter with a 35-yard field goal by Vincent D'Amato to cut the deficit to 20-10. In the fourth, Maynard needed just eight plays and less than two minutes to lead California on an 80-yard drive, culminating with a 10-yard TD pass to Keenan Allen.

Kelly responded less than three minutes later however, combining on a 22-yard touchdown pass to Ozier to give the Sun Devils some breathing room in the double-digit victory.

California converted just 4-of-15 on third down and controlled the ball for less than three minutes in the fourth quarter.
