(Saturday, November 17)
Final Score: Arizona State 46, Washington State 7
Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Taylor Kelly threw four touchdowns for the
Arizona State Sun Devils as they defeat the Washington State Cougars in a
Pac-12 Conference showdown at Sun Devil Stadium, 46-7.
Kelly completed a career-high 87 percent of his passes (20-of-23) for 246
yards for the Sun Devils (6-5, 4-4 Pac-12). Michael Eubank also spent some
time at quarterback, completing 7-of-9 passes for 55 yards, a touchdown and a
pick. Cameron Marshall led ASU on the ground with 75 yards on 16 carries,
while Rashad Ross caught eight passes for 79 yards and two scores.
Jeff Tuel started at quarterback for the Cougars (2-9, 0-8) but he struggled,
completing just 8-of-16 passes for 67 yards. He was also intercepted before
being relieved for Connor Halliday. Halliday completed just 13-of-33 of his
throws and was sacked six times, but he did manage 173 yards and a touchdown
through the air. WSU never got its ground attack going. Carl Winston ran for
39 yards on seven carries but the team had just one total rushing yard.
The Sun Devils took an early lead on a 21-yard Jon Mora field goal less than
three minutes into the game. After a Cougars' three-and-out, Kelly led the
ASU offense back down the field and connected with Ross for a 15-yard
touchdown. It added a two-point conversion to extend the lead to 11-0.
Kelly threw another first quarter touchdown pass at the 2:09 mark, this time
hooking up with Chris Coyle from 18 yards out. The Sun Devils took an 18-0
lead into the second quarter.
Midway through the second quarter the Sun Devils were back at it, adding to
their lead when Kelly found Marion Grice down the middle for a 17-yard
touchdown. After a Cougars' turnover, Eubank entered the game and threw his
only touchdown pass of the afternoon. Coyle once again was on the receiving
end for the Sun Devils, who led 32-0 at the half.
Washington State failed to score in the first half thanks in large part to
going 1-of-10 on third down attempts. It also turned the ball over twice while
ASU did not commit a turnover.
The Sun Devils continued to pile it on in the third quarter and added to
their lead with two more touchdowns. The first came on a Eubank one-yard run
and the final ASU score came late in the third quarter when Kelly connected
with Ross from 31 yards out.
The Cougars avoided the shutout with a late touchdown when Halliday hit
Kristoff Williams for a 54-yard score.
Arizona State improves to 24-13-2 all-time against Washington State and has
now outscored the Cougars 112-7 over the past three meetings in Tempe. The Sun
Devils also become bowl eligible for the second straight season with the win.
