Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Mike Davis caught a pair of touchdown passes,
including the game-sealing score in the fourth quarter, as Texas held off No.
20 Texas Tech, 31-22, on Saturday.
Davis finished with 165 yards on four receptions for Texas (7-2, 4-2 Big 12),
which has won three straight.
David Ash completed 11-of-19 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns, while
Johnathan Gray had 106 yards on 20 carries and 41 yards on two catches for the
Seth Doege went 26-for-44 through the air for 329 yards and a touchdown for
the Red Raiders (6-3, 3-3), who have dropped their last two.
"A lot of disappointment, obviously. We just shot ourselves in the foot. Made
too many mistakes against a good football team," Texas Tech coach Tommy
Tuberville said. The last two weeks we've done that, so hopefully we can
Eric Ward ended with 126 yards on eight catches and Darrin Moore hauled in
seven passes for 108 yards in defeat.
Texas Tech entered the half trailing 24-13, but was able to cut into its
deficit on its first possession of the third quarter, as Doege found Moore for
a 23-yard gain on 4th-and-7 at the Texas 40 to set up Ryan Bustin's 33-yard
The Red Raiders regained the ball at their own 44-yard line following a Texas
three-and-out and converted a 4th-and-1 at the Longhorns' 32 on SaDale
Foster's 15-yard gain on a reverse. Eric Stephens Jr. then capped the 8-play
drive with a 10-yard score on a screen to the right side.
Doege could not connect on a fade to the left side of the end zone on a two-
point conversion attempt, however, keeping it a 24-22 game with 1:35 left in
the third quarter.
Texas later started a drive at its 41 after the teams traded punts, and three
straight runs by Gray netted 27 yards to move the ball deep inside Texas
Four plays later, Davis reeled in a 25-yard touchdown over a defender in the
left corner of the end zone to put the Longhorns on top, 31-22, with 9:14
remaining in the game.
The Red Raiders answered with a 12-play drive that moved as far as the Texas
2-yard line, but after a holding penalty negated a touchdown run, Bustin had
his 23-yard field-goal attempt blocked.
The Longhorns were then able to run out the remaining 5:15 of clock to close
out the game.
"I thought it was the best the offense and defense played together," Texas
head coach Mack Brown said.
Texas took the ball its own 29 following a three-and-out by Texas Tech on the
opening possession of the game, and Gray converted a 3rd-and-14 with a 34-yard
reception before Ash capped the 9-play march by finding a wide-open Jaxon
Shipley in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown.
But the Red Raiders responded with a 9-play, 75-yard scoring drive to knot the
game at 7-7, with Doege hitting four different receivers for double-digit
gains before Kenny Williams rumbled across the goal line from a yard out with
5:52 left in the first quarter.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Davis hauled in a 54-yard pass deep down
the middle four pays later, setting up Joe Bergeron's 2-yard touchdown run.
Texas Tech answered with a 29-yard field goal by Bustin just over a minute
into the second quarter after failing to push the ball across the goal line
from inside the Longhorns' red zone.
Texas was able to regain some cushion on the next play from scrimmage, when
Ash found Davis wide open over the middle on a deep post for a 75-yard score
and a 21-10 lead.
The Red Raiders later regained the ball at the Texas 46 following a short punt
by Alex King, and Texas Tech capitalized on the favorable field position with
Bustin's 41-yard field goal with 5:03 remaining in the half.
Ash then converted a 4th-and-2 at the 50 with a 28-yard toss to Shipley to set
up Anthony Fera's 42-yard field goal, making it a 24-13 game at the break.
