Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Bryn Renner threw for 230 yards and four touchdowns to lead the North Carolina Tar Heels to a 35-20 victory over the East Carolina Pirates in a non-conference clash at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Dwight Jones hauled in two of those touchdown passes and finished with 93 yards on six receptions. Giovani Bernard led the way on the ground for UNC (4-1), rushing for 146 yards and one score on 24 carries.

Dominique Davis completed 41-of-58 passes for ECU (1-3) and finished with 417 yards and two scores, but was also intercepted twice. Lance Lewis finished with 166 yards and one score on 10 receptions in the loss, while Justin Hardy also collected 10 passes for 73 yards.

The Tar Heels wasted little time jumping out to a 21-0 lead. North Carolina found the end zone twice in the opening quarter with touchdown passes from Renner. The first score went in the direction of Jheranie Boyd for 11 yards and that was followed by a 75-yard scoring strike to Erik Highsmith.

The third touchdown came in the second quarter and came courtesy of Bernard, who broke free for a 10-yard score.

The Pirates finally got on the board midway through the second stanza when Michael Barbour connected on a 35-yard field goal.

However, less than two minutes later the Tar Heels went back on the offensive, scoring on another touchdown pass. This time Renner found Jones for a 47-yard score.

East Carolina tried to fight back in the third quarter, as the team posted 10 straight points. Davis connected with Lewis for a 23-yard touchdown at the 5:20 mark and that was followed by a 25-yard field goal by Barbour.

North Carolina went ahead 35-13 midway through the final frame as the Tar Heels capped off a 14-play, 69-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown pass from Renner to Jones.

The Pirates added a four-yard touchdown score of their own, as Davis hit Danny Webster late in the fourth quarter. However, by that time the game was well out of reach for East Carolina.
