Troy, AL (Sports Network) - A 12-yard touchdown catch by Jerrel Jernigan late
in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference for the Troy Trojans as they
recorded the 31-24 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in a Sun Belt
Conference showdown at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Jernigan finished the night with six catches for 77 yards for the Trojans
(4-2, 3-0 SBC) as they won their third in a row. Quarterback Corey Robinson
converted 23-of-33 passes for 237 yards and a score, but he was under constant
pressure and suffered three sacks while tossing three interceptions.
The Ragin' Cajuns (2-4, 2-2) were led by Brad McGuire who scored twice on nine
rushing attempts as the team lost its second in a row and the third in the
last four outings. Chris Masson converted 23-of-41 passes for 246 yards and a
score as well.
McGuire scored the first points of the meeting as he hit the end zone on a
one-yard run at the 10:54 mark of the opening quarter for Louisiana.
Troy took its time in responding, but just seconds into the second period
Shawn Southward crossed the goal line on a six-yard effort to knot the score
McGuire's one-yard burst with 9:12 remaining in the first half made the score
14-7 in favor of the visitors.
Closing out the first half, Troy kicker Michael Taylor knocked through a 26-
yard field goal and Jernigan returned a punt 75 yards for a score to give the
Trojans a slight 17-14 advantage at the break.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Masson hit Marlin Miller with a five-yard
TD pass to push the Ragin' Cajuns back in front at 21-17.
Needing just three plays and 38 seconds to cover 33 yards short thereafter,
the Trojans tripped up Louisiana when wideout Jonathan Chandler tossed a 34-
yard TD pass to Jason Bruce to give the lead back to the home team.
Midway through the fourth period Louisiana kicker Brett Baer tied the game at
24-24 on the strength of his 42-yard field goal, but less than three minutes
later Robinson and Jernigan combined on the game-winning score.
The Ragin' Cajun controlled the ball for more than 34 minutes on the night,
but the squad converted just 5-of-19 on third down.
