NCAA Game Summary - Utah State at BYU

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Harvey Unga gained 118 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, and Dennis Pitta added a pair of touchdown receptions to lead No. 20 BYU past Utah State, 35-17, at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Max Hall threw for 218 yards and three scores but was also intercepted twice on 16-of-23 efficiency for the Cougars (4-1), who won their second straight game. Manase Tonga had a TD run in the win, and Luke Ashworth totaled 91 yards and a score on five catches.

Diondre Borel amassed 213 yards and a TD on 20-for-28 passing and also ran for a score for the Aggies (1-3), who went 6-of-14 on third down conversions. Robert Turbin was held to 47 yards on 17 carries, while Xavier Bowman had a TD grab in the setback.

On the third play from scrimmage, the Cougars fumbled the ball and Utah State recovered on the BYU 43. Eight plays later, Borel ran it in from six yards out to give the visitors a 7-0 lead with about 10 1/2 minutes left in the first.

The Cougars responded with an epic 18-play, 83-yard drive that ate up over eight minutes of clock. Hall's six-yard TD strike to Pitta closed it out and tied it up.

Hall hit Ashworth for a 48-yard TD strike and, as Ashworth dashed into the end zone unscathed, BYU assumed a 14-7 lead early in the second.

Tonga added a three-yard TD scamper late in the second to make it 21-7 at the break.

Chris Ulinski's 20-yard field goal accounted for all the offense in the third, and it was 21-10 at the final frame.

Facing a 4th-and-1 from their own 32 early in the fourth, the Aggies decided to go for it. Turbin, though, was stopped for a loss of one and the Cougars took over. Unga gained 23 yards on the first play and added the eight remaining yards on the next play, as BYU assumed a 28-10 advantage with 13:09 left to play.

Pitta hauled in a 13-yard score late in the game, and Bowman countered with a 16-yard TD grab in the waning seconds to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

BYU outgained Utah State 431-322...The Cougars own a 43-33-3 advantage in the series. Last season, BYU took care of business on the road in Logan with a 34-14 victory, which means the Cougars have won 10 in a row over the Aggies dating back to an exciting 58-56 decision in favor of USU back in 1993.
