NCAA Game Summary - Vanderbilt at Rice

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Warren Norman ran for 119 yards and a touchdown, as the Vanderbilt Commodores handled the Rice Owls, 36-17, in non- conference action.

Jared Hawkins added 61 rushing yards on 11 carries for Vandy (2-2), which racked up 216 yards on the ground in the win. Quarterback Larry Smith had one of the team's four rushing touchdowns and he also threw for 268 yards on 23- of-41 pass attempts. John Cole pulled in seven passes for 67 yards and he scored on a 31-yard run as well.

Rice (0-4) was led by Charles Ross, who rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. John Thomas Shepherd and Ryan Lewis both saw time under center, but they combined for just 122 yards with one touchdown against four interceptions. Toren Dixon was the team's main outlet, finishing with four receptions for 40 yards and a score.

The Commodores kicked off the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown run by Cole just under four minutes into the bout.

Rice countered a few minutes later with a long run of its own, as Ross went 48 yards to paydirt.

A 37-yard field goal by Ryan Fowler gave Vandy a 10-7 edge at the end of the first quarter.

Clark Fangmeier's 39-yard field goal accounted for the lone points of the second quarter, as the teams went into the break knotted at 10-10.

Vandy took over in the second half and regained the lead on a late 33-yard field goal by Fowler in the third quarter. Several minutes later, Smith scurried six yards for a score and the Commodores held a 20-10 lead.

The Commodores added to their lead with 10 more points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Warren first took off for a 58-yard touchdown run prior to a 23-yard field goal by Fowler.

Rice tried to fight back when Dixon hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Shepherd.

It took Vandy less than two minutes to counter, as Kennard Reeves scored on an 11-yard run to seal the 36-17 victory.

The Commodores held a 484-282 advantage in total yards and went 8-of-20 on third downs compared to just a 3-of-18 effort by the Owls.
