GAME NOTES: The Monmouth Hawks are in the midst of a six-game tailspin, and will desperately try to end their losing streak as they play host to the Marist Red Foxes in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash at the MAC.
Marist is on the other end of the spectrum entering this meeting. The Red Foxes have won four of their last five games - all in conference play - and took a thrilling 65-64 victory against Siena Friday night.
Monmouth has lost six in a row and eight of its last 10 games, including an 89-70 drubbing at the hands of Iona Friday night. The Hawks have fallen to 4-11 in the MAAC in its first season as a member of the conference.
Monmouth leads the all-time series with Marist, 35-20, although the Red Foxes took a 75-73 decision at home on Jan. 30 this season.
With 3.7 seconds left to play in regulation, and Marist trailing by two points to Siena, the Red Foxes got a timely steal from Jay Bowie, who drilled a 3- pointer to give his team a one-point lead. The Red Foxes held on in the remaining seconds for the victory. Khallid Hart led Marist in the contest with 16 points, while Adam Kemp notched a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Chavaughn Lewis tallied 14 points with six assists, and Bowie contributed 10.
Lewis has helped lead the Red Foxes, who began the season 0-9, back to relevancy in the MAAC. He leads the team in scoring with 17 ppg and a team- best 66 assists and 49 steals on the year. Hart has come on strong as of late, checking in at second with 14 ppg for Marist. Bowie is third on the team with an 11.5 ppg average. Kemp tops the squad in the rebounding category with 7.4 rpg and a team-best 45 blocked shots.
Monmouth didn't match up well with the high-flying Iona Gaels Friday night. The Hawks fell way behind, 42-26, at the end of the first half, and could never catch up in the 19-point loss. Deon Jones topped the team with 16 points, adding seven boards to his stat line. Khalil Brown added 13 points, and Chris Brady brought down 12 rebounds in the loss.
Jones and Andrew Nicholas have been the proven go-to scorers for the Hawks this season. Jones leads the team with a 14.9 ppg average on 45.3 percent shooting. He also tops the squad with 6.9 rpg, and is second with 34 steals on the year. Nicholas isn't far behind Jones, netting and even 14 ppg. Justin Robinson tops the team with 81 assists. Monmouth is scoring an average of 69.8 ppg this season through 26 games played.
Marist seems to have it all clicking at this point in the season. It's too late to make a run toward the top of the conference, but the Red Foxes can still compete. Even though they're on the road, the Red Foxes shouldn't have much trouble with the struggling Hawks.
