GAME NOTES: The Marist Red Foxes will try to continue their current winning streak when they host the Fairfield Stags in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at McCann Arena on Thursday night.
After losing its first nine games of the season, Marist comes in riding a three-game win streak. Last time out, the Red Foxes defeated visiting Penn, 76-62. Khallid Hart scored a career-high 21 points and Adam Kemp added 12 points, 13 boards and five blocks for the Red Foxes, who also got 14 points for Chavaughn Lewis.
Lewis, a junior, leads Marist in scoring, averaging 16.8 ppg, and he grabs 4.6 rpg as well. The freshman Hart is next in scoring with an 11.4 ppg average. He shoots 41.3 percent from the floor, but as a team the Red Foxes shoot just 38 percent and score an average of 61.7 ppg. For the season, they have allowed just over 72 ppg, but during their current win streak opponents are averaging just over 62 ppg.
In its most recent outing, Fairfield won at Bucknell, 73-64. Maurice Barrow scored 15 points to lead the Stags, who won for the second time in three outings after losing eight in a row.
Marcus Gilbert leads Fairfield with an average of 14.8 ppg, while Barrow is next with 11.9 ppg. They are the only two double-digit scorers for the Stags, who like Marist are a stagnant offensive club. Fairfield averages just 61.7 ppg, shooting just 38 percent as a team. Opponents are putting up 68.3 ppg. Despite only netting a little more than eight points per tilt, Adam Kemp is a force on the inside, posting a team-best 7.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.
Both Fairfield and Marist are tied at the bottom of the MAAC standings, each going 0-2.
While neither team is expected to do much in conference this season, both have some talent and may surprise an opponent or two moving forward.
In this contest however, expect the homecourt advantage to be enough for the Red Foxes to defeat Fairfield. Although, it will likely be close and won't be pretty.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Marist 68, Fairfield 60
