GAME NOTES: Canisius will try to right the ship on Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Griffins host the Fairfield Stags in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play from Koessler Athletic Center.
Canisius crushed Fairfield in an 84-58 final on Feb. 1, but has since dropped three of five, including an 88-81 home loss to Quinnipiac on Thursday. The recent slump has dropped the club to fourth place in the league standings.
The Golden Griffinss were paced by Billy Baron with a game-high 31 points on 12-of-24 shooting from the floor. Chris Manhertz and Chris Perez both contributed 14 points as well.
Baron is the second-leading scorer in the MAAC, as he averaged a gaudy 24.9 ppg. However, Perez (12.5 ppg) and Jordan Heath (10.3 ppg) are the only other double-digit scorers for Canisius.
Fairfield is seeking back-to-back wins for the first time this season, as Maurice Barrow knocked down 5-of-6 shots behind the 3-point line and finished with 19 points in leading the Stags to a 72-66 win over Niagara on Thursday night.
Also scoring in double figures for the Stags were Marcus Gilbert and Steven Johnston with 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Amadou Sidibe tallied nine points and 10 rebounds.
Fairfield, which led by as many as 13 points in the second half, finished the night shooting an impressive 11-of-19 behind the 3-point line.
It was a rare offensive explosion for Fairfield, which is last in the league in both scoring (62.5 ppg) and field goal percentage (.394). Barrow (13.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Gilbert (13.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg) are the top scorers on the roster. KJ Rose (7.9 ppg, 3.8 apg) is the team's leader in assists.
A visit for the Stags is just what Canisius needs to get back in the win column. Fairfield has won just twice in true road tests, and the Griffs are tough to beat on their home floor.
