GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats will be looking to extend a five-game win streak as they travel to face the Samford Bulldogs in a Southern Conference matchup at Pete Hanna Center.
Davidson has torn through the last five Southern Conference games with a 5-0 record, and has won eight of its last nine games altogether. The Wildcats find themselves a half-game behind Chattanooga for the SoCon lead. The Mocs (9-1 SoCon) lost to the Wildcats (8-1) on Jan. 30. Davidson is coming off a 62-43 win over The Citadel Saturday.
Samford had a Jan. 30 contest with Furman postponed to Monday, Feb. 3, which the Bulldogs eventually won, 76-68. Samford has now won three of its last four games, and sports a 4-5 record in the conference.
Davidson holds an 8-1 all-time series lead against Samford, and has won the last two meetings in a row. The Wildcats are 3-1 on the road at Samford.
Davidson connected on 60.9 percent of its shots in the second half against The Citadel, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, in the lopsided victory. The Wildcats went into the half only up by four points, but exploded offensively in the second period to pull away. De'Mon Brooks led the team with 23 points and eight rebounds in the win. Brooks connected on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor, and hit 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Jake Belford also chipped in 11 points for Davidson.
Brooks is by far the leading scorer for Davidson, netting an average of 18.5 ppg on 57.5 percent shooting from the floor. Brooks also paces the team in rebounding at 7.3 rpg with a team-best 15 blocked shots. Brian Sullivan is second on the squad in scoring with 12.1 ppg, and Tyler Kalinoski and Tom Droney each chip in 10.9 ppg. Kalinoski leads the team with 77 assists on the year.
Samford trailed Furman at the intermission Monday in the Bulldogs' win, 31-28. But Samford exploded for 48 points in the second half and outscored the Paladins by 11 in the frame to take the lead for good. Raijon Kelly led the Bulldogs with 19 points off the bench, while Isaiah Williams chipped in 17 and Tim Williams added 16 points with 10 rebounds. Tyler Hood rounded out the double-digit scorers for Samford with 12 points in the contest.
Tim Williams has a solid lead in scoring average this season, netting 16.7 ppg with a team-best 7.3 rpg average. Isaiah Williams is second on the team with 12.1 ppg and Kelly checks in at third with 10.4 ppg. Isaiah Williams leads the squad at 3.4 apg, and Tim Williams tops the roster with 32 steals and 32 blocked shots.
Davidson's hot streak is impressive in that the Wildcats have only scored fewer than 82 points once in the five wins. The Wildcats should be able to have similar success against a Bulldogs team giving up 75.2 ppg to opponents.
