GAME NOTES: With three games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Long Beach State 49ers will be looking to extend a three-game win streak and move up the Big West Conference leaderboard, and they'll start with the Cal State Fullerton Titans at Titan Gym.
Long Beach State has won three in a row and eight of the team's last 10 altogether. The 49ers took down Hawaii, 63-61, on Thursday night to improve to 9-4 in the Big West - one game behind leader UC Irvine.
Cal State Fullerton has won three of its last five games, but has struggled overall in the conference this season with a 5-8 Big West record. The Titans are coming off a win, though, over Cal State Northridge, 82-81.
Long Beach State has a pretty firm handle on the all-time series with Cal State Fullerton, 64-43. The 49ers extended that series lead to more than 20 games with a 75-56 victory over the Titans earlier this season in Long Beach.
With nine seconds remaining on the clock, Long Beach State's Travis Hammonds buried a 3-pointer that gave the 49ers their largest lead of the game - two points - and the ultimate two-point victory over the Rainbow Warriors. Tyler Lamb scored 18 points to pace the 49ers in the contest, adding four rebounds and two steals to his stat line. Dan Jennings recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds as the only other LBSU player to net a double-digit point total. The 49ers hit 41.5 percent of their shots in the contest.
Mike Caffey, who scored five points in the game against Hawaii, tops the Long Beach State roster in scoring on the year with a 16 ppg average on 41.1 percent shooting. Caffey is also the team leader with 4.3 apg and 39 steals on the year. Lamb checks in behind Caffey on the team's scoring list with 15.5 ppg, and Jennings is next at 10.1 ppg. The big man Jennings tops the squad in rebounding at 8.2 rpg, and adds a team-best 30 blocked shots to his resume.
Cal State Fullerton had the lead over Cal State Northridge going down into the stretch run of Thursday night's contest, but a late Northridge run nearly gave the Matadors the victory. But some big baskets from Alex Harris and Marquis Horne preserved the lead and the victory for the Titans. Michael Williams led Fullerton with 23 points in the contest, while Harris and Horne each chipped in 16 points and five rebounds. Harris added a team-high five assists to his all-around strong game.
Williams has been the go-to scorer for the Titans on the season, netting 17.5 ppg on 42.9 percent shooting from the floor. The senior guard adds a team-high 2.5 apg average to his season resume, and brings down 4 rpg. Harris checks in at second on the squad in scoring with 15.3 ppg, and is right behind Williams' assist total at 2.4 apg. Steve McClellan tops the Titans in rebounding on the year with a 6.1 rpg average.
Although Long Beach State has a sub-.500 road record, most of the team's away losses came during a particularly tough non-conference stretch. The 49ers have been stellar in the Big West this season, and should be able to easily outpace the Titans offensively in Fullerton.
