GAME NOTES: The Northern Iowa Panthers will attempt to get back in the win column when they travel to the Windy City to face the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers in Missouri Valley Conference action.
Northern Iowa is coming off a 69-65 setback to Bradley on Wednesday night. Junior Seth Tuttle scored a team-high 20 points for the Panthers, who have dropped two of their last three outings.
Tuttle and sophomore guard Wes Washpun led a Northern Iowa comeback after the Panthers trailed 55-46 with 10:08 left in the second half. Tuttle and Washpun scored 13 of UNI's final 19 points, as the Panthers tied the game at 61-61 with 1:43 left. However, the squad managed just four points the rest of the way as Bradley hit all of its free throws down the stretch.
Washpun ended with 12 points for UNI, which fell to 4-3 in the MVC and 1-7 on the road. This bout wraps up a two-game road trip for the Panthers.
Tuttle leads UNI in scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 14.2 ppg and 7.9 rpg. Deon Mitchell adds 12.1 ppg and Nate Buss 11.0 ppg to round out the double-digit scorers for the Panthers, who average 72.3 ppg on 45.1 percent shooting.
Loyola is also coming off a loss, its second straight, as it fell to Indiana State on Wednesday night, 65-61. Milton Doyle scored a game-high 20 points for the Ramblers, who have lost seven of their last nine despite staying within striking distance of Indiana State the entire game.
Two Doyle free throws and a driving, transition lay-up from the Chicago native gave Loyola a 52-50 lead before Indiana State's Jake Odum took control. The senior guard scored and was fouled to tie the game but missed the ensuing free throw. The loose rebound found its way back to Odum, who scored again while being fouled, this time hitting the free throw to cap a five-point trip that gave ISU a 55-52 lead that it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way.
Jeff White added 13 points and six rebounds for Loyola, which fell to 2-5 in the MVC.
Doyle, who has six 20-plus point efforts this season, leads the Ramblers in scoring with 15.4 ppg. Christina Thomas is next with 14.0 ppg to go with a team-best 6.7 rpg. Loyola averages just 66.4 ppg, but is averaging just 57.4 points in their last seven setbacks.
The Ramblers have been strong at home this season and the Panthers have been weak on the road. Neither team has been scoring in bunches of late, so if the Ramblers can stay close they could pull it out.
