Marquette and IUPUI have met on just one occasion on the basketball court, with the Golden Eagles posting a 76-68 victory on Nov. 10, 2007
The Golden Eagles fell to nationally-ranked Wisconsin last Saturday, 70-64. The loss was the second straight for Marquette, which also fell at San Diego State to begin play in the month of December.
Jamil Wilson scored 22 points to lead Marquette in the loss to the Badgers. After trailing by as many as 11 points, Wilson's three-pointer with 2:08 left drew Marquette within 57-54, but Wisconsin answered and pulled away for the win. Davante Gardner comes off the bench and leads the Golden Eagles with 14.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season. The big man is shooting a very efficient 51.1 percent from the floor. Wilson is second on the team with 11.8 points per contest.
Marquette has struggled at the offensive end this season. In five victories, the team is averaging 79.4 points per outing. However, the Golden Eagles are averaging just 58.8 points per game in the four losses.
After dropping four straight, the Jags enter Saturday's contest riding a three-game winning streak. Last time out, IUPUI defeated Cincinnati Christian, 94-72, on Tuesday, to move to 4-7 on yhe year.
Junior guard Ian Chiles scored 18 of his team-high 22 points in the first half to lead four Jags in double-digits. IUPUI grabbed control in the first half against CCU, going on a 19-6 run to grab a 34-21 lead late and then cruised into the locker room with a 51-35 cushion. The Jags were never threatened the rest of the way.
Chiles leads the Jags in scoring this season, scoring an average of 18.3 points per game. He's not a shy shooter, launching a team-high 171 field-goal attempts and hitting 44.4 percent of those shots. He's also the leading 3-point shooter, hitting 33.9 percent of his shots from long distance (19- of-56).
While the Golden Eagles come into today's game struggling, don't expect much of a let down against a completely over-match IUPUI squad.
