San Marcos, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - R.J. Hunter netted 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and notched four steals as the Georgia State Panthers outlasted the Texas State Bobcats, 66-55, in a Sun Belt Conference clash at Strahan Coliseum.
Ryan Harrow tallied 14 points, and Manny Atkins and Devonta White each chipped in 13 points for Georgia State (22-7, 15-1 SBC). The Panthers have won five games in a row, and lead the Sun Belt Conference by three and a half games with two left to play on the schedule.
Joel Wright scored 12 points with seven rebounds to pace Texas State (8-21, 4-12). Phil Hawkins contributed 11 points in the loss, which was the third in a row for the Bobcats.
Neither team shot well in the first half. Georgia State connected on 27.6 percent of its field goal tries in the first half, including 3-of-10 from 3- point distance, and took a slim 23-22 lead into the intermission. Texas State shot 32.1 percent in the first frame, and hit just 1-of-9 from deep.
The Panthers shot out of the gates in the second half, netting 72.2 percent of their attempts from the field, and added 14-of-21 from the free-throw line. The Bobcats improved to just 36 percent shooting, and were outscored, 43-33, in the period.
Georgia State had a slight advantage in points in the paint, 26-24, and outscored Texas State from 3-point range, 18-9. The Bobcats won the battle in bench points, 16-6.
