Fresno, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryce Dejean-Jones scored a career-high 24 points to lead the UNLV Runnin' Rebels past the Fresno State Bulldogs, 75-62, in the Mountain West Conference opener for both squads at the Save Mart Center.
Dejean-Jones shot 7-of-12 from the field and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line for UNLV (10-4, 1-0 MWC), which extended its season-long winning streak to seven games. Khem Birch (14 points, 17 rebounds) and Roscoe Smith (13 points, 12 rebounds) both registered double-doubles, while Kevin Olekaibe added 13 points of his own.
For Fresno State (7-7, 0-1), Marvelle Harris paced all scorers with 25 points, his fifth 20-point output of the season. Cezar Guerrero stuffed the stat sheet in the losing effort with 16 points, eight assists, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
UNLV shot a 43.3 percent from the field in the first half while holding Fresno State to just 37.8 percent shooting, as it carried a 34-31 advantage into the break. The Rebels used a 9-0 late in the frame to take the lead.
The Bulldogs brought their deficit to just one, 46-45, with 10:45 remaining on a Harris jumper, but the Rebels ended the threat with 10 unanswered points to effectively put the game away.
UNLV won despite shooting a woeful 1-of-16 from 3-point range. It made up for its long-range struggles by outscoring Fresno State at the free-throw line, 22-8.
